Flash Flooding Again

Updated: Sat 1:32 AM, May 22, 2010

In a month that has been very wet already, Tony says more rain is coming this weekend. The flood risk this go round is in the Buckeye State.

12:20 Update

Severe Flash Flooding is on-going in Northwest Scioto County Ohio. Police tell me the town of Rardon has been swamped and evacuations are on-going.

As much as 4 inches of rain have pelted down in this area since 9 o'clock with another half inch to inch expected overnight.

These downpours will move east into the Ohio and Big Sandy Valleys overnight with the main risk turning into minor street flooding. In the pre-dawn hours, rains will reach Charleston and the Kanawha Valley/Coalfield region.

If you live in an area prone to flooding, monitor water levels frequently and seek higher ground if flood waters approach. Also, motorists are reminded of the peril in crossing flooded roads at night when vision is poor.

Weekend Events and Weather

It’s the next to last weekend of May and guess what? As we steamroll toward a top 5 or higher wettest Mays on record, more rain is on the way.

First things first, late this Friday evening a Tornado Warning has been issued for Adams and Northwest Scioto Counties Ohio. The parent thunderhead of this storm may graze Northwest Scioto County and then move into Pike County Ohio before 10:30 PM.

At the same time, Thunderstorms with hail and heavy rains are common between Dayton and Cincinnati and between Lexington and Louisville.

These storms will weaken as they arrive in shower and thundershower form in our region overnight.

Then at first light Saturday, showers will be common on radar as we host the Healthy Tri-State 5 K run/walk at B-Ville Community Park.

After this morning round of rain (an hour or 2 at any one location) at Lake Vesuvius for the kids fishing derby (9 til 12) , the air will haze and muggy up as midday sees some cameo breaks to sun.

Any afternoon sun will then fire up some thunderstorms. Look for heavy rains to back up some storm culverts and lightning bolts to cause some power and communication flickers during these hour long squalls.

The WV state track and field meet at Laidley will feature at least one thunder delay, but the kids should be able to slosh their way thru a sometimes wet, sometimes hazy meet.

By Sunday, the air will dry up considerably as the sun returns this time for a command performance. While a brief thundershower is still possible, odds favor eastern sections to see a half hour of rain then. So the mountains from Elkins to Summersville to Beckley are fair game for a brief thundershower.
