A December to Mis-Remember for Snow

A Winter to Forget, SO FAR!
So I was driving back from Charleston late last night and on the windshield, what did I see in amazement? Big fat juicy wet snow flakes melting as they hit my windshield! Hooray, I shouted as an 18 wheeler threw spray onto my windshield. Then today on my daily walk, which by the way was crisp NOT COLD, what was it that graced my presence but some dandruffy snow flakes falling from a dark cumulus cloud. Yippee I chirped as the red-red robin I wrote about last week feasted on still another juicy earthworm.
Such is the fate of snow lovers this December of 2011. Call it “snowless and sad”, call it "lame and lousy", call it what you want but it is what it is!
Kind of reminds me of my junior year in high school when we went an entire winter without snow in Philly. Oh there were some good ice skating conditions that year as I scored 10 goals in one hockey game on Pennypack Creek (the game lasted 4 hours) but absolutely, positively no snow accumulations and no snow days from school. Ouch!
Teachers and school kids, don't fret about that last stat!
Looking ahead, the rest of December will be snowless as we ring out the old and in the new with rather temperate conditions. In fact the only things keeping the next 3 days from being mild are a strong and persistent wind (red cheek alert for the kids out with their new bikes) and a lot of clouds to block out the warming rays of Ol Sol. Highs near 50 won't feel it.
Then we will prep for a blast from the past as a sudden arctic front arrives with snow on Monday as we watch bowl games. Will the cold lock in for the next 6 weeks and help us to play catch up in the all important snow category? Given La Nina’s (cool Pacific Ocean) tendency, chances are good we will still muster a 20-25 inch snow winter ahead. Still, only time will tell on that front.
By the Way Buckeye and WVU fans, the weather this last weekend in 2011 in Jacksonville and Miami will feature warm,sunny days near 80 degrees and balmy nights with temperatures near 70 for South Beach goers and and in the 60s for pre-Gator Bowl festivities.
Since the Bucks play on Monday, breezy and warm mainly dry weather looks good. But a word of caution for 'Eers fans, don't just pack bermuda shorts and shirt sleeves in your suitcase. Throw in a warm sweat shirt and a fall jacket.
You see, trouble is the ‘Eers play next Wednesday when that same front that snows and blows here will send a shot of chilly air all the way south to Miami. So be prepared for a chilly time of it as highs on Tuesday and Wednesday struggle to get out of the 60s and night time temperatures dip into the 40s!
