Fall Weekend Ahead

It's time to balance those eggs as we get set to greet the fall season with the equinox. Tony blogs on this weekend's weather and events.

Fall’s Weekend Debut

It is time to turn the calendar ahead as we put behind the scorching summer of 2012. Along the way we have endured a handful of 100 degree days (most since 1988) and 40+ ninety degree scorchers (tops since 2007). Of course the severe weather season was highlighted by the “derecho of a lifetime” on June 29th when hundreds of thousands of wsaz.com readers went without power for days.

To say it has been an eventful summer of weather is an understatement!

Now we begin the fall as the autumnal equinox graces our presence at 10:49 Saturday morning. So if you are lining the streets of Milton or Dunbar for morning parades (Milton for the 19 band strong Pumpkin Fest and Dunbar for the Fall Fest), as those gala events begin at 11am, they will be coincident with the first few minutes of autumn.

Weather-wise, summer’s Friday finale will feature hazy sunshine with a warm and sticky breeze. Highs may well hit 80 degrees on Broadway and Main in Jackson Ohio where the Apple Festival will pack them in. I will be among 30 to 50 thousand apple zealots who jam Apple-town on Saturday for Ohio’s largest outdoor lighted parade. One-hundred and thirty units will dance, prance and fancy their way past the Apple Water Tower starting at 7:30. Think of the crowded boardwalk on a hot summer night at Myrtle Beach and you will get the notion of how jammed it will be Saturday night.

The Saturday forecast includes warm breezes and partial sun by day though the passage of a cold front will introduce a shower or thunderstorm at some point. Can’t say when that shower will pass the Victory Grange apple butter kettle just yet.

The other Apple Fest of local renown going on this weekend is Clay WV where the Golden Delicious Festival celebrates 40 years of sweet history this weekend. Quilt shows, a 5K run and nightly entertainment showcase the charm of this quaint Central WV community. The grand festival parade kicks off at 1pm Saturday.

By Sunday, the weather will have taken still another turn to cool side as a fresh batch of Canadian air will invade on the heels of gusty NW winds.

Add it up, if you like summer, enjoy Friday’s warmth. If you are into parades, then Saturday is your day. Finally if fall is your time of year, the autumn breezes of Sunday will suit you perfectly!

Updates on events to come, so check back!

As for the folklore around balancing eggs on the equinox, school teachers use the change in seasons to inspire their students to study science. Truth be told, if the egg is perfectly symetrical, then all you need is some patience to balance it any day of the year, just don't tell the kids!
