Tony is all pumped up for a true fall weekend complete with autumn breezes, night time football, Octoberfests and foliage galore.

True Fall Weekend Ahead

Here it is the 4th weekend of the autumn season and so far at least the look and feel of fall has been missing. Sure last Saturday dawned with patchy frost and temperatures in the 30s only to be followed by Indian Summer highs in the 70s.

By “TRUE” fall I am referring to those gusty autumn winds that chill us even in the afternoon sun. Those winds will be evident on Saturday.

In addition, the leaves are hitting their sartorial peak this weekend from the New River Gorge to Beech Fork Lake to the Zaleski State Forest and Greenbo Lake. Pick your favorite winding rural road and you are sure to get a whiff and glimpse of fall at its finest!

Events-wise, another busy weekend is ahead. So let’s get down to business!

It all starts at 8:30 on Saturday morning with our friends at St Joe’s here in Huntington hosting their second annual Charity Choice 5K Run. More than 250 runners filled up on carbs at Friday night’s pasta supper at the school’s old gym.

Event coordinator Andy Fischer said he expects 300 runners for the opening gun. “We raised 25K last year for local charities and we already have topped that amount this year”, Andy told me. The Prestera Center and Hoops Children Hospital at Cabell Huntington are this year’s designated charities.

Last year’s run began on a chilly note with temperatures in the 30s. This year we should be 10 degrees higher in the mid 40s but with enough wind to be a factor as runners round The Joan (Edwards Stadium). I will be a traffic cop at 3rd avenue so runners give me a shout out as you pass.

Fischer adds that runners can sign up as late as 8am to be part of the fun and competition.

If you are into Fall Festivals, you have another weekend of fun ahead. The Buffalo Octoberfest runs from 9 am til 3pm at the town Gazebo. Last year’s assortment of down-home Appalachian music, country delicacies, crafts and antiques attracted an enthusiastic crowd. If those pesky showers I am forecasting can be short lived, the leaves in full color along Route 62 into town will add the finishing touches to a fun day.

In Hamlin, Saturday is Heritage Day with an all day celebration of this Southern West Virginia town’s colorful history. The action starts at 10 am and runs until sunset. Yard sales, cookouts and plenty of country music will entertain all day long.

If you taking the trip down state route 10 into Hamlin you are in for treat as the leaves are nearing peak color.

At the Zaleski State Forest, it’s fall hike weekend with a tour around Lake Hope filled with the flora, fauna and foliage of the season. A cup of hot sassafras tea awaits all who complete the nature tour.

As for train riders taking the trip through the colorful mountains, the morning grey will be followed by rising ceilings and thinning clouds so some sun should break through the overcast on occasion. Gusty breezes will play havoc with jumpers at the Gorge while whitewater enthusiasts use their wet suits to shoot the rapids on the New and nearby Gauley Rivers. Temperatures in the low 50s will feel 40s most of the day.

Finally, the ‘Eers are at home for a night game with Big East foe K-State. Afternoon showers for tailgaters will be followed by a brisk and chilly night at Milan Puskar. Dress for an evening in the 40s!
