First Snow Flakes Soon to Fly

The calendar says it's a bit early, but that won't stop the first snow flakes of the season from falling on Friday and Saturday. Tony has the flakey story for soccer fans and fellow snow lovers alike.

Friday Night Update

Careful if you are traveking around dawn on Saturday. A dusting of snow may combine with sub-freezing temperatures to ice up some bridges.

Here's a look at the Friday snow that fell in the Southern Mountains of WV along the turnpike where near Flat Top Mountain, a quick burst of snow made for a Winter Wonderland.

Snow for Soccer Fans in Beckley

If you have been waiting for Old Man Winter to make his first genuine appearance I am happy to report the wait is over!

Wet snow is in the forecast tonight in the mountains and Friday into Saturday for the rest of us. Now don’t panic, the snow will melt for most of us on Friday as it mixes with a cold rain.

By Friday night, I suspect any heavy snow shower can coat the grass and rooftops anyplace, anytime.

Speaking of the mountains, Snowshoe had the ground whitened this morning from the Welcome Center and the Raven to the Top of the World. The summit measured a slushy inch at Skidder Run (the bunny trail), the third accumulation of the season at the nosebleed summit.

With wet snow in the forecast through Saturday in the high country, the ski resorts could easily measure 6 inches of heavy wet snow while the lower mountains around Beckley, Summersville, Richwood and Buckhannon pick up a grassy few inches.

That mention of Beckley is done purposely since the WV State Soccer championships are on the line. Friday’s semi finals will be damp and cold with a slushy soccer pitch that will turn wet and muddy (unless Carter Field is astro-turf).

Saturday’s state title games will feature a crusty few inches of snow on the pitch at dawn. Temperatures the next few days will not make it out of the 30s with wind chills in the 20s in Beckley.

So good luck to GW, Hurricane, Winfield and Charleston Catholic fans and players. Here’s hoping your corner kicks and headers find the back of the net!

By the way, in case you are thinking snow out, soccer is played rain, snow or shine around the world as soccer players are a hardy bunch!
