Groundhog Day Springy Predictions

Groundhog Day Prognostications

It’s official! Spring is right around the corner. So say several well-known and “respected” woodchucks.

Here’s the skinny.

At 7:03 GST (Groundhog standard time), the wisest hog of them all Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his slumbering groundhog lodge in Jefferson County Pa. to proclaim an early spring.

Since Phil and his predecessors have been at it for more than 100 years, one has to weigh heavily what Phil told TV cameras this morning. In a shivering dialect of Groundhogese, Phil blurted out this rhyme.

“It’s cloudy and cold here at Gobbler’s Knob, but no need for you humans to sob. Winter is not here to stay, instead Spring’s sun rays will soon be at play”

Of course, that’s a forecast for Pennsylvania, not West Virginia. So I thought it best to consult with forecasting varmints of local renown, before making up my own mind.

Turns out both French Creek Freddy (of Upshur County fame) and Concorde Charlie (Athens WV) also did not see their shadows and have emerged from their hibernation proclaiming winter is over and an early spring is upon us.

As for me, I am squarely in the camp the next 4-6 weeks will be nothing short of a repeat of what we have gone thru this winter time and time again. It appears cold air is locked into the Eastern half of the country and a parade of southern storms will roll into our region on a twice weekly basis. The only questions to be answered are

1. is the coldest air of the winter still to come (Answer, likely) and

2. Will we get a deep snowfall before Lent begins? (Answer, possible)

Of course, the days are growing longer now and by March 1 the average high is 50 degrees, so I will give Phil and his mates their due...of course the weather will trend warmer as we head to March.

As for me, golf can wait though with the Masters promos already showing up on TV, we can all take comfort that after March Madness (both hoops and weather) , spring will indeed arrive as scheduled.
