Heat Builds Slowly for Weekend

Break out the sunblock and shades, Tony is blogging up a semi scorching weekend ahead.

Weekend Heat Bearable

We are now two weeks removed from the heat of the Memorial weekend, so you can argue we are due again for some hot weather. So right on schedule, the heat is returning for June brides and all those enjoying the outdoors.

While the heat will be tame by June standards with days near 90, make no doubt about it the evenings will turn into mid-summer dreams. Fiery sunsets will see temperatures fall from the 80s into the 70s, perfect for sitting on the banks of our rivers and for taking in the St. Albans carnival. Imagine riding the Ferris Wheel at sunset along the Great Kanawha!

I have issued a sunburn alert for the kids heading to the Children's Art Fest in Huntington and for all those taking in the Russell Railroad days and the Biker Bash in Charleston. The June sun is the strongest of the year and capable of a severe sunburn for anyone who is out worshipping the sun without protection.

An SPF 30 is highly recommended this weekend!

Event-wise in the Tug Valley, the Hatfield-McCoy marathon starts at 8 AM Saturday with temperatures near 60, and then warms to 75 by the end of the marathon. The race winds its way along the Tug River with runners navigating two states before completing the 26 mile-385 yard course.

Same goes for the East Greenup Kiwanis Run by the River which starts at 8 Saturday morn and ends by 9 (shorter race at 5K and 10K), though runners stay on the Kentucky side of the mighty Ohio.

Sunday's heat will be a tad higher than Saturday's and will also be joined by some late day haze and humidity.

Next chance of rain looks to be a good one with showers and thunder expected on Monday and Tuesday.
