Hillbilly Days and Ramp Fest Weather

The spring festival season is off and running with two of TC's favs. Tony has the skinny on Saturday rains in Pikeville and Richwood.

Weekend Events and Weather

Looks like a wet and wild start to our weekend with heavy rains and localized high water on Saturday morning.

Of course timing is everything so I suggest a close inspection of the morning Doppler Radar scope before you update your outdoor plans. Josh will be on duty until 9 and our WSAZ interactive radar link can help you fine tune when the rains will be exiting.

One plausible scenario is for heavy rains in the predawn until 8-9 AM time frame with the passage of a vigorous cold front. Morning light winds will pick up 30 miles per hour in gusts by afternoon as the front passes through.

That “fropa” (weather geek terminology for frontal passage) will push the moist rain-filled air off to the east and set the stage for brighten skies mid morning (10AM-1PM) into the afternoon.

As ceilings rise, the sun will make a cameo appearance through the clouds in the late morning only to be replaced by a grey canopy of afternoon clouds. That afternoon cloud deck will produce a new lighter, though cooler brand of showers. Those new showers will likely be more off than on.

Event-wise, morning runs across the region are in jeopardy thanks to the expected wet grounds, though the heaviest rains should be east of the Ohio River by 9 (Heart Race-Walk) with the Big Sandy and Kanawha Rivers an hour or 2 later. Bark in the Park on Magic Island in Charleston looks wet before noon wih drying after.

I will be leaving for Pikeville around 11AM and expect a relatively rain free ride down to Hillbilly Days where I will take part in the Grand Hillbilly Parade. Having done this parade in the past, I can tell you that folks line up 5 and 10 deep along the Hambly Blvd. route and all parade entries are afforded rock star status!

I expect parade temperatures to be a cool 59 degrees with a gusty wind from the West.

In Nicholas County, it’s the annual Feast of Ramson in the Ramp Capital of the World, Richwood WV. From 10:30 am until 3:30 pm., the Richwood Chamber will be cooking up a ramp feast fit for kings and queens. Ham, bacon, taters, beans and corn bread will be served piping hot at the High School.

At the Junior High gym there will be an Art & Craft Show with live music and cloggers all day long!

Sunday will turn brighter, drier and warmer.
