Home and Garden Weather

It's an early spring and Tony has the proof. His Home and Garden weekend blog talks of trees and sunburns.

H & G Weekend a Winner

It’s Home and Garden weekend in Huntington as the gang at WSAZ is hosting this annual celebration of spring. Want to learn how to control crab grass? Then John Marra, “Green Thumb” himself, is on hand. Want a new indoor Jacuzzi or outdoor fenced in deck for your home? The right vendor will be there to answer your questions.

You see right about now after a long, cold and snowy winter, cabin fever is usually running rampant. Folks normally jam the Big Sandy as if to say, enough is enough with Old Man Winter! But this winter has been like none since the late 90s. Not only has snow been a hard to come by commodity (less than 10 inches for the winter for some) but also cold weather has been in short supply. The coldest lows of the winter are 12 in Charleston and 14 in Huntington, the highest in my 25 years here at WSAZ.

Even this week, after a Monday snowfall, temperatures have soared back into the 60s for highs and now the trees are having an early coming out party. The Saucer Magnolia and Redbud are leading the way with the Bradford Pear and Flowering Crab Apples sure to burst onto the scene next week when temperatures soar into the 70s!

Weather-wise, this second weekend of March will sweep you off your feet. Skies will be virtually cloud free as golden sunshine fills the heavens. Jack Frost will have his paint brush out both mornings before melting away under the strengthening March sun. So sunny will it be this weekend that I actually gave a sunburn index on my 6pm broadcast. If you had a bad sunburn as a kid you will need to start using sun block this weekend!

Of course the history of weather for this second weekend in March is rather notorious. Back in 2008 a heavy wet snowstorm cut back on attendance as a half a foot of snow and icy cold temperatures made for slick travel conditions. Back before the H & G Show, the Blizzard of 1993 buried our region with two feet of snow back on the weekend of March 12-14.

So come on out to the Big Sandy this weekend and celebrate the early arrival of spring. All your favs at WSAZ will be on hand, including Brandon, Rob, Melanie and Susan, Josh and Cathleen, Tim and Jess and Bill and Carrie. I will be there on Saturday evening from 6 until 9 in case you want to talk tornadoes.

The doors open at 10 on Saturday morning and again at noon on Sunday.

It’s always a great time as we spring forward this weekend.
