Of Easter Flowers and Winter Snow Showers

Easter is the season of rebirth and this go round, the warm sun this weekend is hitting at just the right time. Tony looks back at the snowy season gone by and ahead to a Top 10 weekend!

Easter Weekend Ahead and Look Back at Snowy Winter

I open this weekend blog with a picture from Stonecrest Golf Club in Floyd County Kentucky. This magnificent course has the distinction of being covered in snow fifty different times this fall, winter and spring gone by! That’s a record duration of snow for the Big Sandy Valley.

More on the winter snow in a bit.

But first, let’s savoir in the moment as a beautiful Easter weekend is upon us. Glorious sunrises, symbolic of the religious holiday, and warm and gentle breezes will soothe us after the longest cold and snow season in many years.

No wonder this weekend rates a TC Top 10er!

Now back to the snowy season gone by.

Think about it!

Since Veteran's Day every major and even minor holiday has been affected by snow and cold on or near the celebration day.

Vets Day it snowed the day after, Thanksgiving, the day before. While it was indeed the first White Turkey Day in 24 years, a White Christmas was not in the cards this year but only because the snow that fell on Christmas was only capable of a sugar coating.

All the way from New Years Day (it snowed on January 2nd) through St. Patty's Day and April Fools Day the story was the same; namely, all holidays had cold and snow either day of or day before/after. Even Tax Day this past Tuesday featured a coating of snow. That’s when the Stonecrest picture was shot by photojournalist Al Bolling.

An incredible 50 days of snow over a wild and wooly 5 months. That’s a record not apt to be witnessed again locally for a generation.

Now finally this Easter weekend we break the string as warm sunshiny days and pleasant evenings grace our presence.

With the dogwood in full bloom, finally we can say SPRING HAS SPRUNG!
