Ohio River Watching

Ohio at Crest, Next Rain This Weekend

It has been a week of muck and mire on the mighty Ohio with a silty tide of rain water swooshing downstream.

Late this Thursday afternoon, the Ohio is either within a few inches of crest or already slowly falling. Now that early week rains have finally flushed their way past the Bandstand in Pomeroy, the steps at Battle Monument Park in Point Pleasant and the Harris Riverfront amphitheatre in Huntington, the crest is working its way downstream.

That means the newly renovated riverfront park in Ashland and the Greenup Dam will see the high water peak this evening with Portsmouth cresting 2 feet under flood stage by early Friday.

So the river will start down swiftly during Friday with a 10 foot drop expected by Saturday night.

After that, things get dicier. Weekend rains will arrive on Saturday with computer predictions varying as to how much rain falls. My gut says the heaviest rains this go-round will fall to our west placing the Ohio downstream from Cincinnati to Louisville and Paducah in line for a flood event. That would leave our stretch of the Ohio running high next week but not in flood.

Let me stress this. The first drop of rain has not fallen from this weekend’s rains so any speculation on where the Ohio is going is just that, speculation!

One thing for sure, March is going to be a wet month and as I stated last week off the cuff, but I will confirm now, I predict we will see a top 10 wet March by the time the lion is through roaring. You see, the current wave train of storms that is aligned all the way back to Asia is likely to produce a 7” rain month, which will place 2011 in the top 10 wet camp.
