President's Day and Valentine's Weekend Snow

No rest for the winter weary. Tony tracks new snows due in for the long holiday weekend.

New Icy Snowfall for Valentine’s Night

The heavy snowfall that zapped a large part of the WSAZ viewing area has moved on late this Thursday night. Left behind plenty of icy patches as the afternoon snowmelt turns to the night time refreezing.

Mains roads are fine, but runoff from snowmelt can make for slick spots on our interstates where plowed snow melted and trickled onto the road. Of more importance, slushy late day roads in the hills, if left untreated, will be slippery.

Also, slush and standing water have refrozen in many spots making for slickness on sidewalks and untreated steps.

This marks 9 of the first 13 days of February seeing some snow with a high probability that the next 3 days will extend that streak.

Next up a fast moving clipper will arrive from the west on Friday afternoon armed first with some mixed showers of melting wet snow and rain. Evening rush hour will likely feature falling snow with some minor slush build-up.

After dark, the wet snow will fall harder and turn more dry in nature as colder air returns. This spells trouble for night time travelers as a quick 2 to 4 inches of snow is likely especially along and south of I-64 from dusk to dawn Saturday.

As for the President’s Day weekend, off and on snow flurries can redust the ground at any time and have you heard? Your favorite resort measured a whopping 15”-20” of snow on Thursday with a fresh half a foot or more likely in time for holiday weekend down-hillers and boarders.

No doubt about it, the snow conditions at Winterplace, Canaan, Timberline and Snowshoe are head and shoulders better than those at Sochi Russia for the Winter Olympics!
