Sorghum Festival Friends and Fun

It has been more than half a year since West Liberty was hit by a massive twister. Tony traveled back to Morgan County this past weekend to take in the Sorghum Festival.

 Return to West Liberty

Hard to believe, but it has been 7 months since the devastating tornadoes of March 2 ravaged parts of Eastern Kentucky and Southern WV. Among the hardest hit areas, West Liberty Ky was at ground zero for the worst damage and sadly the highest death toll in Morgan County.

I was there the day after to see the coroner vans, the ripped apart buildings and the tears in the eyes of West Libertians. Reporting from Main Street was the single hardest assignment of my career.

Two months later in early May I returned to report on the state of West Liberty. That day I survey the destruction more closely, walking into damaged businesses, picking up large granite boulders that were the foundations of homes.

Since then I have kept up with West Liberty's comeback anecdotally through digital pictures and stories of people who have visited Morgan County.

So this Saturday, I traveled back to this quaint Appalachian town to take in the annual Sorghum Festival. What I found astounded me as the community had come together to celebrate it's heritage, which now includes the scars from the great tornado.

I will add to this blog as the week goes on, but for now I offer a look back at my trip as I reported on Newschannel 3.
