St. Patty's Day Snowstorm

Don't put the shovel away just yet. Tony blogs of a dense St. Patty's Day snowfall.

Bough Bending St. Patty’s Day Snowstorm
In a winter that has long since worn out its welcome comes word of a  wet snowstorm in time for St. Patty’s Day.
The setup is a familiar one with cold air bleeding down from the north and colliding headfirst with southern moisture teeming up from the Gulf.
Add it up and a dense snowfall will arrive by Sunday evening after an afternoon chilly rain and last through the first hours of daylight on St. Patty’s Day.
Unlike the dry powdery snowstorm that happened 2 weeks ago, this system will produce a wet sopping snowfall with flakes the size of silver dollars possible at the height of the snow.
Those big flakes and the expected accumulations will weigh down tree limbs and offer the prospects of power outages once again especially points south and east.
Since we avoided power outs from the last snowstorm, one has to wonder if we are living on borrowed time or if the Luck of the Irish will hold out again.
Meteorologist Josh Fitzpatrick reminds us that accumulations will be toned down by day thanks to the warmer ground left behind our 60 degree days on Friday and Saturday. “A lot of the snow that falls initially will be melting. But careful at night as darkness sets in and chills the ground”, Josh said.
In fact the climatology of late winter-early spring here in Appalachia suggests night time heavy accumulations especially in the hills are a good bet.
So while valley floor dwellers may see only a few inches of snow with much more melting, people living in the hills can measure more than half a foot of snow.
It’s all part of the end game of Great Winter of 2014.
So for St. Patty’s Day the revised greeting will be ERIN GO SNOW as we jump into the Top 10 list of snowiest Marches on record!
Cheer up, spring starts Thursday!
