Summer to Fall in the Blink of an Eye

Weekend Weather Shenanigans
The heat was on again on Friday as temperatures crested at the mercurial 90 degree mark again (unofficially 42nd time in Charleston and 34th in Huntington). While those numbers are nowhere near records, they simply help put the finishing touches on the blazing summer of 2012.
Now we turn our attention to the first fall-like front of September. Late this Friday, after a hot and steamy night at high school football games, thunderstorms with heavy rains and cannon shot of thunder are lighting up the skies of Indiana, Western Ohio and Western Kentucky.
Ahead of those storms, downtown temperatures may stay near 80 all night long as blow-off cirrus clouds from these cells infiltrate our skies and keep the temperature from falling. So it is indeed one last night for your AC to humm before cooling relief arrives.
These western rains will arrive in the Scioto Valley and far Northern Kentucky pre-dawn, along the Ohio River from Pomeroy to Point Pleasant-Gallipolis-Huntington-Ashland-Ironton by daybreak and in the Kanawha Valley and Southern Coalfields by 9 AM.
That puts morning charity runs at risk, like the 5K in Louisa as part of Septemberfest.
Those morning rains, feeding on a tropically humid environment, should muster several gutter-gushing downpours that will flood some streets and swamp some viaducts. An inch or two of rain can fall with the heavier cells.
Since this front is a fast mover, I expect 5 or 6 hours of rain followed by rapid drying from west to east in the afternoon. So while I expect to drive through heavy rain heading south on US 23 on Saturday morning heading to Louisa, chances are the rains will be moving away or at the very least lightening up for the Septemberfest Parade.
Fortunately, all our local college football games have night kickoffs. That means cooler, drier winds will have invaded the Joan, Peden and Commonwealth in time for the Herd, Bobcat and Wildcat tilts.
Afternoon tailgaters can still see a leftover shower through 4pm, but the trend will be brighter skies from mid afternoon until dusk.
Dress for an evening in the 60s at all three games, so a pullover or sweat shirt is the fashion of the night.
By Sunday, a dazzling display of fall cumulus clouds will cover the sky as gusty autumn breezes blow. A passing shower is likely to last 15 minutes to a half hour tops in spots.
By Monday morning, lows near 50 will have the kids wearing a light jacket heading off to school!
