Weekend Weather Woes and Wows

Updated: Fri 11:10 PM, Jul 13, 2012

The middle weekend of July can be a bear with blistering heat and tropical thunderstorms. Tony says none of the former and a bit of the latter are in our future.

Weekend Weather and Events

Another big summer weekend is upon us and like the others; weather will lay a big role in who attends outdoor theatre, the county fair and youth baseball games.

Here’s my best as of Friday night.

The Friday soaker through much of the region managed to miss the soy and corn fields of Southern Ohio. While this area is on the eastern edge of the Midwest drought, recent rains have helped in the Scioto Bottomlands.

Two one inch downpours during the past week have helped Matt Lewis’ soy in West Portsmouth. “We were in dire straights until that rain came”, Matt told me. “Another few downpours soon and I will have a decent crop this year”, Matt added.

Friday’s rains of one to two inches have so thoroughly dampened the soil in Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia that a feedback will begin to take place. Every day the sun comes out it will immediately start to evaporate water from the ground. That will produce afternoon clouds and the risk of new showers and downpours.

In addition, the clouds will keep the temperature in check. So highs in the 80s, not 90s, are in the cards for the next 5-7 days!

Take this weekend as we get set to wrap up the Lawrence County Fair in Proctorville and begin the Putnam County Fair in Eleanor. The old timers go by the adage that is “always hot and it always rains at the fair”. Well truth be told it is July (the hottest and 2nd wettest month of the year) so I would expect some heat (upper 80s with humidity) and rain (afternoon-evening thunder).

Still much of the time will be rain free and good for outdoor events.

As to being able to say when and where it will rain, if only I knew! Since weekend rains don’t exist right now, we will just have to follow the progress of the new day’s rains as they form. WSAZ.COM and our newscasts will be good sources of radar information.

One final thought, we are now well onto our way toward a normal or even wet July. If we get a few downpours the next 2 weeks, we will have taken the edge off the short term agricultural drought that set in two months ago.

Here’s a look at the Lawrence County Fair story that I did on 5:30 Edition.
