Weekend Weather and Event Marquee

Lots going on this weekend. Tony blogs of festivals, outdoor plays and gully washers.

Festive Weekend to Have Some Interruptions

The second weekend of summer is upon us and judging from all the festivals and outdoor plays going on, it is safe to say summer is in full swing.

More on the event marquee to come but for now I want to focus of the weekend weather and beyond.

Friday’s near 90 degree heat was accompanied by a “relatively” comfy humidity level, witness the lack of clouds and showers across the region. In fact, the skies trended blue in color, a sign that haze and humidity had not yet made a return.

However, lurking just to our south and west, muggier tropical air was poised to make swoop back into our region once the wind flow veered around from the east to the southwest. That change in wind was to occur first thing Saturday morning.

No surprise where the wind is blowing from the south in Central and Western Kentucky, the steamy air was producing showers and gully washing downpours along I-75 from suburban Cincy to Lexington to Knoxville.

Look for that moister air to begin producing showers and thunderstorms in our region by Saturday afternoon-evening (fading at night) and then regenerating Sunday afternoon. You know the drill!

That means we are back on street flooding and power flicker watch this weekend.

By the way, strong signs point toward an intense line of storms forming on Tuesday between I-80 and I-70 thru Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa. That’s also the breeding ground for derechos at this time of year, so we may well be tracking some of the more violent storms of the season on Tuesday.

Naturally until they form and we have a sense of where they are moving, it is not possible to say where and when they will hit.

As for weekend events try these on for size…Point Pleasant Sternwheel Regatta, Saint Albans Riverfest, Olive Hill Homecoming and FestivALL Charleston.

I have included links to all the fun.
