Winter Storm Eyes Tri-State

One of the strongest storms of the winter will assure us of a Lion-like start to March. Tony blogs of a massive Sunday night-Monday storm.

Winter Snow/Ice Storm Sunday Night-Monday

Late this Friday night new supercomputer data is ratcheting up the Sunday night-Monday winter storm into major status.

Travel will be extremely difficult Sunday night into Monday as rain changes to ice (freezing rain and sleet) then to snow. The sudden drop in temperature that accompanies the moisture will make for an ice up and hazardous road conditions.

The amount of accumulation will be a relative measure from one area to another and will be dependent on how fast the changeover occurs and the proportions of sleet, freezing rain and snow that fall.

Suffice it to say a dense mass of sleet/snow will accumulate thickly by first light of Monday. I sense a plowable 3"-6" area-wide.

Since this storm has to race 3,000 miles from coast to coast over the next 3 days, it is prudent to expect alterations in the forecast.

Travel plans should be completed by sundown Sunday if possible and changes to the school schedule on Monday and Tuesday may well be the highest of the winter.

Given the arctic cold that will follow, it is a sad reality that several more school days will be lost next week as the "great" winter of 2014 rolls on.
