KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Many people will do just about anything now to get some relief at the pump.

So how about switching from your car to a bike to save a buck?

It’s a trend that's picking up across the country because of rising gas prices, but it's a trend that’s not without its dangers.

Some people prefer to travel on two wheels instead of four, and more people are shopping for bikes.

It’s a cheaper alternative to the pain at the pump that comes with risks.

Wednesday morning a car struck a man riding his bike in Charleston

Last week in Huntington: a truck hit a bicyclist and didn't even stop.

Police are bracing for more of these problems on the road.

Police say bike riders do have to obey traffic laws.

They should ride in the direction of traffic and always wear a helmet, but not everyone's ready to make the switch.

Police also encourage bike riders to stay off of busy streets. They recommend riding on side streets where the traffic moves at a slower pace.

If you do decide to get a bike: where to park it might be a problem.

Last week a group of people met to discuss ways to make Kanawha County more bike-friendly.

DRIVERS who speed, drive recklessly, drunk/drugged & on their cell phones are the #1 reason more people don't ride bikes OR motorcycles IMHO. Those people are even more dangerous to those on bikes than they are to the rest of the drivers in cars so I don't want anyone I love riding bikes out there among these idiots driving their cars like that! Whatever happened to the proposed bike path that was once discussed and planned from Ceredo/Kenova to Huntington? I remember hearing about one several years ago & believe it was being proposed for federal and state funding at the time. THAT path would have been great! For MU students AND others commuting to & from Huntington & then it could have eventually been linked through the park & towards eastern Rt#60 area. Now THAT was worth funding but the Feds/State probably thought it wasn't needed. Well, NOW it certainly is. I hope someone can update us & maybe get that project going for real

this is not a relief to many in this tri stae area. there are no safe biking roads when you live in chesapeake away from town and work in wanye county. the goverment should give more of a break in the gas relief to areas such as ours. we have no subways, trains or steady bus comute for the larger areas of our tri state. it is a choice to some to either work, eat, pay the bills, or go on welfare.(which is also poor to our area)we help other countries with millios of $$ and leave our own to suffer. our goverment needs to take action for our people in our towns and stop this inflation to our own. making the change to bike it isn't the answer for every one.more of us have to sacerfice a bill for gas, to make ends meet as we can. apply the higher cost to the cities that have more public transport and for those outside city limits give that relief. america needs to park it for 3 days and stand up to this inflation. or gov. start feeding more of our own poor & working class here at home.
