CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Charleston officials say the state's largest city is expecting $1.84 million in federal stimulus money for projects ranging from streets to homeless shelters.

Brian King with the mayor's Office of Economic and Community Development says Charleston automatically received the funds because it's considered an entitlement city by the federal government.

The city also is seeking another $2.8 million in stimulus money to renovate Slack Plaza and build a fire station in South Hills. But City Manager David Molgaard says getting that money will be highly competitive; the federal government is expecting up to 10,000 applications and $30 billion in requests for about 100 grants totaling $210 million.

They should never accept the funds unless they can pay it back without raising our taxes.

The city may have automatically received the funds but it does not automatically have to accept them. I ask Brian King (Office of Economic and Community Development) and Victor Grigoraci (Treasurer’s Office), and any others involved in the acceptance of these Federal Government ‘dangling carrots’, to read the fine print before accepting any of these funds. Otherwise, the City of Charleston may find herself being dictated to, by the Federal Government in various fashions she may not have expected nor wanted. So, be sure you know what you are getting yourselves and most importantly the City of Charleston into, before taking the bait.
