Local 'Public Safety Heroes' Honored for Service
The Charleston Public Safety Council honored several local public safety heroes Thursday at its 7th Annual Salute to Public Safety Luncheon.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- They risk their lives to protect us, but first responders rarely get the credit they deserve.

The Charleston Public Safety Council honored those it calls local "public safety heroes" at its 7th Annual Salute to Public Safety Luncheon on Thursday.

Organizers say all of the honorees are selected by their peers in their respective departments.

2009 honorees:

  • Shawna Nunnery - Metro 911 Telecommunicator of the Year
  • Detective Jarl Taylor - Charleston Police Officer of the Year
  • Captain David Basham - Charleston Firefighter of the Year
  • Paramedic David Hodges - EMS of the Year

The Charleston Public Safety Council also chose to honor Patrolman Jerry Jones during Thursday's luncheon.

Patrolman Jones was killed by friendly fire on September 13. He was a member of the Charleston Police Department for three years.

According to a news release, the Charleston Public Safety Council is a non-profit volunteer organization that designs and supports community safety initiatives, concentrating in the area of domestic violence and youth projects.

We are all out here to provide services (paid and volunteer) for the Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement and Metro 911 service to the Citizens of Kanawha County. I don't know the Metro Dispatcher or the Detective but know the Charleston Firefighter and the Charleston EMS worker but congratulate them all for their services to Charleston and Kanawha County. I am glad to see anyone being congratulated on a job well done and wish we would see many others recognized for the duties they perform. Thank You for your service.
