KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- While the New Year's Eve holiday means celebrations and parties, police also are stepping up their game.

WSAZ.com's Brooks Jarosz took a ride with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department as they cracked down on clerks who were not checking customers' identification.

Thanks to a partnership from the Communities that Care and a grant from Gov. Joe Manchin's office, these compliance checks are making a difference.

The Communities that Care organization says statistics show 50 percent of 7th graders say they drank beer within the last year. Meanwhile, that increases to more than 57 percent for 10th graders, stressing the importance of checking IDs.

Maybe if parents would stand up for what is right instead of doing whatever there kids want them to do we wouldn't have as many problems in our country as we have now. I suppose you'd also let them take illegal drugs and have premarital sex while you supervise too?

Anyone giving alchol to a miner should be ashamed, they get a hold of alchol quick enough as it is. How would you feel if you gave it to them, and then they got killed.

To Jerry - you realize that if just one child goes to your house and drinks - then returns home and tells their parents about what went down - you are going to jail. My wife's parents said the exact same thing when we were in school. My wife was smart enough to not "take advantage" of her parents coolness...her brother and sister was always drinking though. Guess what - her brother is now doing about any drug known to man and her sister is a raging drunk. My opinion is that my wife's mom and dad are 100% responsbile for that. It is just the wrong decision to allow the children to drink. Too many studies show horrible outcomes when it comes to teenage drinking consumption. You are not doing your child a favor in anyway - sounds like you need to grow up a little yourself before you have anymore children. I assure you my children respect me for making the decisions that I do- you are not getting respect for this. You are just being used to drink. Do not allow it.
