Alzheimer’s Disease Support Group

By Joy Pelfrey, Director of Senior Services, Cabell Huntington Hospital

When faced with the difficulty of caring for a family member suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, it can often be helpful to seek help from a support group. Support groups are vital links to other caregivers and individuals affected by Alzheimer’s – offering them an opportunity to learn more about the disease from people going through the same experiences.

Joining a group can be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do for yourself. New friendships are made. And you’ll receive encouragement, the latest information and helpful suggestions for caring for people with Alzheimer’s – as well as for taking care of your own needs.

Gloria Urian attends a support group at Cabell Huntington Hospital to help with the care of her mother who has Alzheimer’s disease.

“It has helped me and my husband feel like we’re not alone in this,” said Urian. “While sometimes it’s heart-breaking to share stories, it’s also very encouraging that you’re not alone – that there are others going through the same path that you’re going down.”

Caregivers can often share unique experiences and insights that only a caregiver can share. And in a support group setting, they can provide much-needed advice and comfort.

The Alzheimer’s Support Group at Cabell Huntington Hospital takes place at 6 p.m., on the second Tuesday of every month, on the Ground floor of the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center. It’s free to participate and there’s no need to register in advance.

If you’re experiencing the challenges of caring for a person with Alzheimer’s Disease, we hope you’ll consider joining a support group. To learn more about support groups at Cabell Huntington Hospital, please give us a call at 304-526-2695 – or send us an email at seniors@chhi.org.
