Hometown Hero: Habitat Volunteers

Posted: Fri 11:34 AM, Nov 30, 2012

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- These men like to get together, eat lunch and swap stories. But what's unique about this group of retired guys is that when they hang out -- they build homes.

"I started in '95 and Walter had been volunteering before then,” said Daryl Kinch.

“So, did he teach you a few things?” asked WSAZ.com’s Susan Nicholas.

“No!" Kinch laughingly answered.

That sense of humor keeps these guys coming back day after day to build a home from the floor up. Volunteers with the Huntington Area Habitat for Humanity have built 78 homes in the past 22 years. And these guys have worked on most of them.

“It gives me something to do where my wife still works and it keeps me out of mischief," said Kinch.

“We try to make it fun and we joke with each other and razz each other so that keeps it interesting and light and makes it fun to be here," said Walter Mason.

“To stay active as much as anything and it's a good cause it helps out everbody. Everyone deserves a good home," said Dale Smotherman.

The home they are currently working on is for Heather Hundley. She's worked right alongside the guys for most of the project.

It's this sharing of time and talent that got our attention.

"Over the years you guys have inspired a lot of people to pick up a hammer and help. So, today, we're honoring you as our hometown heroes," said WSAZ.com’s Susan Nicholas.

The buddies -- making a difference in peoples lives every day.

“Thank you for coming out every day, spending your time, helping build a home for me and my family," said Hundley.
