Hometown Hero: Rick Frame

BRAXTON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's rare to have a softball tournament with 10 teams, more than 100 players, but everyone is on the same side.

It's all in honor of a man who many are calling a hero.

Rick Frame has touched countless lives through his 30 years as a teacher and coach. But two years ago, his life changed forever. He was diagnosed with gallstones, but was shocked to find out it was something much more serious.

"They come out and said we just are so sorry, your dad has cancer in his common bile duct," Rick's daughter Hollie Lindale said.

Frame's doctors said the odds were not in his favor. But being a basketball coach for decades, he knew that sometimes statistics don't tell the full story.

"When we first found out, the doctor told him he had a 40 percent chance," Lindale said. "Honestly, he looked at the doctor and said, 'I won a lot of games shooting 40 percent, so I'm not even worried about that.' "

Ask anyone who knows him, and they'll tell you, Rick is a fighter. It's his battle with cancer that's inspiring other patients and has rallied the entire community.

"He has just inspired so many people from kids to adults to other people fighting," Keith Greene said. "Rick is something special. It's kind of hard for me to talk, but Rick has been an inspiration through my life."

Keith Greene is not only a former player, but has also coached along side Frame for years.

"There's not hundreds, but thousands upon thousands of people that he's impacted," Greene said. "I know that sounds crazy, but today is just a tribute to him and how many people came out to support him."

For Frame, all the attention is something unusual.

"To be honest with you, I get choked up at times because it's pretty overwhelming," Frame said, "the support that we've had."

Being a coach, Frame has advice for others going through the same battle.

"Never give up," Frame said. "Battle to the very end, and if you can block out the negative stuff."

So, a man who's had so many titles: coach, teacher and father ... Now has another one to add to the list: Hero.
