SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- You can probably find many schools where the folks say the school librarian is the unsung hero, but at Green High School in Franklin Furnace, Ohio -- Megan Large is larger than life to many.
“She’s our librarian, assistant volleyball coach, track coach in the past, service learning class teacher," said J.D. Emnett, Principal at Green High School. "Shootout for diabetes, Christmas giving, raising money, providing Christmas presents to the less fortunate…”
Recently, the school got together for an assembly, and gave Megan a surprise.
“Sammie here is going to help me as I present this week’s hometown hero award to Megan large,” said Emnett.
Sammie has been battling health problems, and though they can often keep her from school, she isn’t far from Megan’s library for long.
“I have diabetes and I have gastroparesis, which is where my stomach doesn’t move," said Sammie King, a library aide. "She’s been amazing to me, she inspires and helps me. If I have a bad day I can come in here and she just cheers me up.”
“She helps Sammie fight every day to help Sammie regain a normal teenage life; a life that’s been put on hold a little bit," said Sammie's mom Carole King. "When Sammie got a gastric pacemaker put in so that she could eat again, they were there. Her and her husband and her young child, I feel blessed to call her my friend -- and she makes me a better person every day.”
With many hats, and her thousands of dollars in fundraising, how can Megan find time in her life to be all these things to all these people?
“God’s blessed me with an amazing life and an amazing family that allows me to go and do what I want," said Megan Large. "And if he’s provided me with that than I feel I need to help someone else along the way also.”
Megan is a living example for her students in her treasured service learning class where she seeks to teach them about the power of giving back.
“If they can give back that will help them become leaders as well as servants, and that will take them far in life," said Megan. "If I can take a small group of people and help them focus on other people -- then I think I’ve succeeded.”
As Sammie and everyone else around Megan can attest -- the seeds of love she has sown has had quite a harvest. That is why Megan is this week’s Hometown Hero.
