Bird Feeding Projects for Youth

I'm bored! If you have school-aged children, you certainly expect this out of your family -- especially after the recent school closings.

If this happens again, I have a suggestion. Why not give your children a project that not only is fun but can serve the needs of our feather friends? Have them make bird treats to hang in the back yard.

Your family can string garlands with large raisins, chunks of dried fruit and peanut butter in the shell. Children also love making peanut butter and jelly pine cones and orange treat cups for their feathered friends.

As for the peanut butter and jelly cones, gather up some pine cones, string or yarn, peanut butter and apple or grape jelly. No surprise here is that birds are better attracted to apple and grape jelly. Tie the string or yarn to the tops of the pine cones for hanging. Divide the pine cones into two piles. Smear blobs of peanut butter on the pine cones on one pile and jelly on the other. All you have to do is hang them in the trees near your house. After all, it's fun to watch them dive into one of those cups.

Now, for the orange cups: cut the oranges in half to serve as the treat cup. Scoop out the insides and use them in a salad or eat as is. Poke three holes near the top of the cups for the string to serve as a hanger. Fill one cup with a mixture of chopped nutmeats (peanuts, pecans, coconut). Fill the second cup with fruit or you can even use dried fruit or black oil sunflower seeds. Sunflower seeds could bring in the larger birds like blue jays. All you have to do is hang them in a tree and refill as necessary.

Hopefully, good weather will arrive so your children can get back to their regular outside routine. Let's hope so. In the mean time, they can have fun feeding the birds and helping our environment all at the same time.
