HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's a great personal accomplishment to many gardeners to grow their own vegetable transplants from seed.

As the plants start to grow in your selected container, keep the light on at least 16 hours a day and even all day wouldn't be a problem. If you are using a tray for seeding, make sure to rearrange the container under the lights because you will have a very noticeable mountain and valleys in the tray where the light intensity creates different growth patterns. Make sure to keep the artificial light source no further than six inches from the seedlings at all times.

There isn't a need to fertilize your new vegetable transplants except when mowing them to the garden. At planting time, a weak solution of miracle grow for example would be adequate.

The best way to water is from the bottom of the container. Applying water over the top of succulent plants that have no way of drying themselves off will only spell trouble with fungus diseases. I like to place the tray in another tray of water and wait till you see the water rise to the surface then take it out.

Don't forget to treat the plants to a variation of temperatures and light conditions before setting them outside for the summer. This is called hardening off your transplants and it will help them get adjusted to a different environmental conditions outdoors.
