HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- You have probably heard of the term "bird brain" as it would be associated with someone who might be lacking in common sense.

Well, the origin of the term certainly explains why birds tend to bash into your windows at home only to fly back and try it again and again. You would think they would learn the first time that they met with a solid glass resistance. However, about this time of the year when love-struck birds are in their mating patterns, we seem to have this problem more than any other time.

Actually, the reasoning they are smashing their tiny bodies into your picture windows is that they see their reflection and think that they are seeing a mate or on the other hand another bird that is invading their mating area. In either case, their aggressiveness can cause a real mess on your window, get you up in the morning like at my house the last few days or leave their you-know-what mess all over the windowsill.

The best way to solve this situation, and in most cases it works, is to cut down the reflection on the window outside so the birds flying by won't see their reflection. You can pull the blinds, put strips of paper on the windows or they actually have a fake spider web you can stick on the window to give the birds a sense of depth perception and reduce reflection. Usually this bird brain activity should cease around the middle of May, hopefully.
