HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Are you ready to seed a new lawn or maybe over seed an existing lawn? The time to do this is now but care needs to be given to the type of seed and the method of sowing. No matter what type of seed you choose, always read the seed label attached on the package.
By law, it needs to be on the seed container. Even if you buy bulk seed from a bin, that bin by law must have a label attached to it. On the label you will find all the information you will need to know about the quality of the seed itself. It lists the type of seed, how much weed seeds are in the package, what the germination percentage is and when the grass was last treated.
Keep in mind that grass seed is the cheapest part of establishing a great looking lawn especially if you consider your time and effort not to mention cost, so read and understand the label. One more thing, price shouldn't be a consideration because there is little variance between varieties so go for the variety that does your lawn the best job.
I'm going to give you my recommendation for the best grass variety to grow in the area because I use it myself and have other homeowners rave with it's results. This grass variety I love is turf type tall fescue.
Please don't get this variety confused with KY 31 Tall Fescue. That grass is great for hay and pasture fields and playground areas. The turf type tall fescue has a medium width blade, grows great in full sun as well as shade and can tolerate our hot summers without fading out. I can't say that for KY 31 Tall Fescue.
