HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The best lawn mower out there isn't any one commercial name but a group of mowers called mulching mowers. They are set apart from conventional mowers by the way they cut up grass clippings.
In plain terms, they cut grass blades then suck up the clippings into their special designed housing where they drop down again to be cut over and over again. The grass blades are reduced to fine clippings before they settle on the soil surface. The mulching mower reduces the grass blades so small that their leaf surface is 10 fold greater than cut from a conventional mover. Its these small pieces that will decompose much much faster and return quality plant material and nutrients to the ground.
A mulching mower is a win win win situation when it comes to mowing your lawn. It actually reduces time spent in mowing your grass because you don't have to bag the grass clippings. Also a mulching mower will reduce your dependency on fertilizer because the grass clippings you return to the lawn are rich in valuable plant nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium all of which you pay big bucks for in a bag of fertilizer.
Finally, a mulching mower is very friendly to the environment. It keeps all those bags of grass clippings you put at curb side out of the public landfalls. If you are in the market for a new mower, make it a mulcher.
