HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Are you keeping up the TLC to your fruit trees in your landscape? If not, you might have a less than a quality harvest this Summer and Fall.
If you want tree fruit like you see in the grocery store, you have to give them the required management all season long. Commercial orchards pay special attention to the right time to the hour to control insects and disease. However, you as a backyard orchard grower, have some easy ways to get top quality fruit with only little spraying.
Right now you should be spraying apple, peach, cherry and plum trees for the many insect and disease potential problems that are out there. One easy to use product and for lack of spelling out commercial names is called orchard spray. Actually Its a spray that's available at almost all lawn and garden centers that will control disease as well as insect problems in one easy application.
All you need is a pump up sprayer or a hose in sprayer. However, its essential that you apply this product say every 10 days to two weeks from the time the leaves first appear in the spring till the leaves fall off in the fall. Now if it rains after you spray, you need to spray again.
That sounds like a lot of spraying but if you want perfect fruit, it needs to be done. Any lesser amount of spraying will lessen the quality of your fruit proportionally.
