HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The local county fairs have for hundreds of years offered great enjoyment for people in those areas to lay back and enjoy the simpler things in life. Things haven't changed even today at the many local county fairs in our region. Sometimes we have to stop our fast pace of life and relax and certainly the local county fair is the place to be.
County fairs are a great place to support our youth programs, especially 4-H and FFA youngsters where they show off their skills and knowledge especially in the raising of livestock. Remember many of these youngsters will be the farmers of tomorrow.
As you walk down the aisles and aisles of market steers, hogs and lambs, stop and talk to the youngsters there because it gives them a sense of pride that someone recognizes their accomplishments. You can also get a better appreciation of what it takes to put meat on your table.
Don't think for one moment that county fairs are only about livestock. Where else can you go to see the best of the best vegetable production in the region as well as exhibits of crafts, flowers, baked pies and cakes as well as canned goods. Ah, don't forget to go by the many 4-H project areas to see what our youth are doing.
Then there is the auction that usually culminates most fairs in the region. This is a great place to see the great big smiles of youngsters as their animals are sold and most of their financial awards for their hard work will be going into their bank account for college.
Don't forget to schedule an evening at the fair for some great enjoyment and don't forget the hot dogs and funnel cakes.
