Support Your Local Farmer's Market

If you don't already know, most farmer's markets are up and running. That includes the close-to-my-heart Central City farmer's market in Huntington's West End.

Farmers are doing a great job of garden management, especially taking into consideration the increased disease and insect problems to the better-than-normal growing conditions over the last month. With all the hot temperatures and sunshine and with proper irrigation, the farmer's markets should be the place to visit to get the freshest of the fresh fruits and vegetables.

Let me say this up front, overall, the best selection and quality of fruits and vegetables can be found at farmer's markets. Furthermore, the cost of the produce is usually less than at the grocery store because they don't have to tack on the cost of transportation, say from Florida, California or even Argentina and Mexico.

There has to be a reason why hundreds and hundreds of customers take a trip to the Central City Farmer's Market each and every week.

It's no secret: the public loves the freshness of the product, the cost, and the best aspect--getting to know first-hand the person, or farmer in this case, who actually grows the food they eat. Check out the farmer's market in your area. If you are unaware of its existence in your area, contact your County Extension Office.

Happy eating.
