Late Season Fertilizing and Planting Grass

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- If you don't want to hear this, cover your ears but fall is just around the corner. For that reason, I wanted to give you some hints that can improve the looks of your landscape.

First of all, the best time to plant grass is in the next three weeks. Spring is a good time but it takes a back seat to fall grass planting. The reasoning is that the grass I recommend and grows great in this area is a cool season grass that will grow better as it gets cooler and cooler rather than in the spring when it gets warmer and warmer.

Turf type tall fescue is the variety of cool season grass I recommend for this area and the amount I recommend rate is 10-12 pounds per 1000 square feet if you are looking at a new seeding and you can cut that amount in half if you are just trying to tweak the looks of an existing lawn.

Another pre-fall chore you want to remember is to dig up and divide the many perennials out there in the region. Don't forget to dig up and store the more fragile herbaceous perennials so they don't go to mush in the soil over winter. Elephant ears are a prime example.

Don't forget also to fertilize your lawn around the middle of September with a slow release nitrogen fertilizer and do it again about the first of November. While the grass is dormant on the surface starting in November, the roots will grow all winter long if the soil isn't frozen.

The November feeding also goes for trees and shrubs that lose their leaves. Now, if those trees are in the lawn, when you feed the lawn you are feeding the trees also. However, you might want to increase the fertilizer under trees in the lawn because you are feeding for two, the tree roots as well as the grass roots.
