HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Check your calendar and you will see that its the first week of September. WOW, where did the summer go? More importantly, its the start of the grass seeding season. Certainly this a great time to over seed your lawn or if you feel ambitious, its time to completely reseed your lawn.
There are several reasons why now is the best time to seed your lawn. First, I hope you use many of the Turf Type Tall fescues that are available at most lawn and garden centers. Its important to realize that a cool season grass like these will grow better from seed in the late summer or early fall because these grasses will grow better when the temperatures get cooler and cooler rather than hotter and hotter when planted in the spring.
There are several things to keep in mind when seeding now. Here is a simple recipe for grass planting. First is to make sure your lawn is sweet enough with lime. Add lime if needed. Second, you want to apply about 12 pounds of turf type tall grass seed for about 1000 square feet if you are completely redoing your lawn. Third, and very important, is to make sure the seed gets into the soil surface about 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
The best method for seeding is to use a slit grass seeder that is available at some rent all dealers in the region. Now, if you are just seeding bare spots, rough the soil up, spot sow seed but remember to cover that seeded area up with mulch like straw.
Right now is an excellent time to seed grass mainly because there is lots of soil moisture available to the new grass seeds. Now, if the soil moisture gets low, make sure you never let the soil around the seeds dry out because all your lawn efforts will be down the drain.
These hints should help you keep the quality look of your lawn as you expect.
