HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Homeowners can take a sigh of relief when they even think about starting all over again with a new lawn. Truthfully, it used to take hours and even days to try and create a new lawn. You would have to kill out all the existing grass and weeds, get out the tiller and groom the lawn for hours before you even thought about seeding. Then you had to seed and then immediately cover the seed with straw.

Forget all that inconvenience because with the piece of lawn equipment called a slit seeder, you can have a beautiful new lawn in 1/4 the time and effort. This slit seeder I'm referring to is about twice the size of an average mower but it does two things. It drops the seed on a new lawn and then incorporates that seed with its many small discs.

With a slit seeder here are the basics of seeding a new lawn. First you need to kill all the existing vegetation with products like Roundup. Wait about two weeks, then on top of the dead grass you seed with the slit seeder. Its just that simple. Actually the dead grass you don't have to remove, acts like a mulch to keep the seed in place and helps retain soil moisture.

I would get started as soon as possible and make sure the soil is moist so the slit seeder can better penetrate the soil. Most larger rent all dealers should have a slit seeder available for use. Check them out.
