Vacation Care for Your Houseplants

If you are planning a vacation this holiday, don't forget to take care of your houseplants before you leave.

Most of the time, we don't forget to stop the mail and newspapers and even turn down the heat a bit, but sometimes we forget to take care of our house plants. We give the plant members of our family a monstrous drink of water when we leave and hope to see them green when we get back.

Added to the sometimes less-than-needed house plant care when we go away is the fact that wintertime is stressful on plants indoors, anyway.

Here is a unique way of keeping your plants in better shape until you get back. Cover them with a plastic bag. Plastic bags act like a miniature greenhouse and reduces water from being evaporated from the plant and can protect them for up to three weeks. You can use quart size bags up to those you can get from the dry cleaners.

All you need to do is place stakes in the pot that are higher than the plant itself. Three or four should be plenty.

Don't stop there with plastic bags. Drop the temperature down in the house a bit, say to around 60 degrees. This will further reduce plant moisture loss, not to mention save on your heating bill.

Keep the plants from direct sunlight when you are away and you can even place more than one plant under one bag. You might even want to place all the plants in your bathroom where the humidity is a little higher due to the water in the toilet.
