More and more people are purchasing live Christmas trees as compared to cut or artificial trees. During Christmas, it can be used to decorate the house during the holiday season, then put outside becoming a beautiful functional landscape plant.

If you are going to become successful with a live tree this Christmas, you need to care for it properly after it is brought indoors.

Be sure to keep your live Christmas tree indoors confined to a cool room . Also, if you have purchased a live tree, now is the time to start thinking about it's permanent location in your landscape. That includes plans to dig the hole about a couple weeks before Christmas.

Not only do you want to dig a good hole, but make sure to cover that hole so rain and snow don't spoil your best efforts to plant that tree. Make sure also to cover the back fill because you don't want it to get wet and freeze solid.

Just like a freshly cut tree, if you aren't ready to adorn your house with it right away, put it somewhere outside out of the sun and wind and make sure to keep the soil watered. Actually they sell a special product that when sprayed on a live tree or even a fresh cut tree, will help keep tree needle moisture loss to a minimum. They sometimes sell it as Vapor-Guard or Wilt-Proof.

It's also recommended to keep the tree inside as cool as possible, avoid using electric lights, as well as artificial snow and above all don't keep the live tree indoors any longer than around one week. One week isn't long but remember your tree will be serving two very important purposes.

You should be able to find several locations to purchase a live tree but don't forget to consider where you place it outdoors considering how big it will get in 20 to 25 years or even longer. You don't want to prune it severely because it got too close to the house for example.
