HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Lots of rain in the fall can make for beautiful scenery, but it can also lead to problem of a different kind.
We're talking about the Asian Lady Beetle.
They thrive in plants that retain a lot of water.
I love the forest in the fall, especially around October when the leaves start to change color. What is going to take away from a lot of that beauty in the autumn is what is in those trees.
What's in the top of those trees is succulent leaves. Where there is succulent leaves, especially because of all the rain we've had, is aphids.
There is going to be a lot of them up there. Here is the bad news. The best food supply loved by the Asian Lady Beetles is the aphids themselves. Lady beetles love to eat aphids.
I'm predicting a really bad year for Asian Lady Beetles because of the succulent leaves and resulting aphids up in the tree tops.
Once the freeze comes along and the leaves start changing colors they are going to come out like a cloud.
Let me add to that, the problem with the brown stink bug, we didn't have that a few years ago. 2010 was the first time we've had the brown stink bug. We're starting to see a lot of those getting in to the homes.
What happens with the Asian Lady Beetle and the brown stink bug, they come around your house and they can detect a warm air flow coming from the inside your house out and they'll follow through and go inside. You need to take precaution before they get inside.
TEMPO is probably the best insecticide to use and it can be mixed in a home sprayer. Here is something you need to remember. When you are spraying the TEMPO, you need to spray around windows and door frames and especially under the louvers and up where the attic is. That is where the asian lady beetles are going to get in.
Once they get in you've really got a problem. You've got to spray before they get inside.
Make sure you read and follow all label directions on that pesticide label.
Until next time keep your green thumb growing.
