BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Retailers posted disappointing September sales this week. It's prompting shoppers to turn frugal and raises concerns of an even weaker holiday shopping season.
But, it appears what is turning out to be bad news for the economy is boosting the cash registers at Goodwills across the country.
Carolyn Workman considers herself someone who hunts for the best bargain. One of her stops Thursday was Goodwill.
"Wow, I didn't recognize the quality of it," Carolyn Workman said. "At first I was a little apprehensive but then I was like, wow, they got all kinds of brand name baby stuff and they got really good deals on it."
Some of the stuff is brand new with tags and never worn. Other stuff is consignment shop quality.
At Goodwill, business is up 18% this time from last year.
"We had a store spike here in Barboursville in September. We had a feeling it might be because of the Milton Flea Market fire, but that's consistently stayed for the last couple of weeks," Carter Seaton at Goodwill Industries said.
The local store in Barboursville has increased business in the 15% range this year.
Goodwill takes the money you spend at its stores and puts it into programs to train people to re-enter the workforce.
