PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A company with more than 100 years of service in southern Ohio is apparently laying off the remainder of its workers Monday, according to two workers at Mitchellace in Portsmouth.
The shoelace factory has been in operation on Murray Street in Portsmouth since 1902. Rumors of layoffs have been in the community for weeks.
WSAZ.com's Randy Yohe is in Portsmouth Monday, where he spoke with a couple workers who confirmed the layoffs.
A supervisor told WSAZ.com the last of the employees were laid off Monday and workers are inside cleaning the building out. The Keating family owns the building and is on premises, but not commenting according to Yohe.
Employees estimate the company currently employed between 50 and 126 people. WSAZ did a story with Mitchellace in 2003, at a time in which the company employed between 300 and 400 people. At that time, the company had bought out one of its competitors and had plans to employ a couple dozen more workers in Portsmouth.
The company website also indicates that Mitchellace has a manufacturing facility in Honduras.

No one made these acusations because they know once you open your mouth about being unhappy,,,,,, Mitchellace searched and searched for a way to fire you. Trust me it happened to someone I know. If they got the call that OSHA or anyone was coming, they would come unglued. Take this down, do this, do that, get that out of here, act this way, or whatever. Obviously as bad as they freaked out something was wrong and needed to be fixed before the old OSHA came in. I remember back when I heard about a maintenence man that did all he could to get them to buy fuel for the boilers, he spoke up about it, other workers knew he questioned the working conditions, guess what they made up a reason to let him go. And they continued on with there business, because the one who spoke up was gone. Why would this always happen???Amanda was probably the smartest HR manager they had, or at least smart enough to move on while she was still able to.
