BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia’s 'Sales Tax Holiday' saves you cash up front when buying Energy Star products and it saves you cash in the long run by cutting down your utility bills.
But one month into the holiday, a lot of folks were surprised to find out what qualifies for the tax free savings.
Jeff Lockhart’s a manager at Best Buy he says if there is ever a time to not put off buying a major appliance this sales tax holiday is it.
“It’s instantly no tax, its tax free when you come in to purchase it, you don’t pay it upfront, you instantly get the tax off it,” Lockhart said.
There is one catch though- the appliance has to have an Energy Star rating.
“They’re just trying to get taxpayers to save a little bit of money to get the things they need and they want,” Lockhart said.
The holiday is drawing people into the stores like a vacuum and what qualifies for the tax free purchase may surprise you, because it’s not just kitchen appliances, TV’s also qualify.
To help you navigate what qualifies and what doesn’t the state actually has its own website up and running for Energy Star.
Sales crews at Best Buy say one month into the program it’s still got people going 'Wow, Who knew?'
“It’s definitely an investment for the consumer to come in and buy something that is Energy Star, that way they get lower a electric bill, they get a better TV all the way around and you get a better experience at home,” said Sales Manager Jason Bell.
Good news for the economy, the environment and the consumer.
