HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Most of us are doing all we can to avoid catching the Swine flu. But now it’s not just our own bodies that we need to worry about.
We now also have to worry about keeping your pet healthy.
Earlier this week the Centers for Disease Control confirmed your pet can contract the swine flu from you.
So far the CDC says test have shown one cat in Iowa has caught swine flu. Experts believe that cat got the disease from its owners.
“It’s freaky. I had no idea they could catch that,” said Pet Owner Jeanne Anne Rutherford.
Dr. Kelly Pinkston runs ‘Help for Animals’ in Barboursville, she says while people should be aware that they can pass this disease along to their pets its important not to get to worried about the situation.
“I would tell them not to panic and not to be overly concerned. Just use common sense, basic sanitation. Don’t lose any sleep over your pet getting it or giving it to anyone else,” Dr. Pinkston said.
Health experts stress that while pets can get swine flu from their owners, pets cannot pass the swine flu to humans.
“We don’t have to worry about our pets giving it to other people or our children. On the flip side, there is no vaccine or treatment for pets," Dr. Pinkston said.
Besides the one confirmed case of swine flu in that cat in Iowa, health officials say a ferret has also contracted the flu from its owners. Both cat and ferret survived after their illnesses.
