MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- While the threat from the swine flu pandemic seems to be decreasing, health officials warn people not to let their guard down.
Statistics seem to suggest swine flu cases have plummeted in the last month. In fact, West Virginia is no longer listed as one of the states with widespread cases, although Ohio and Kentucky still are.
It's this drop-off that may be to blame for the lack of people coming to vaccination clinics.
Mason County had one Friday evening, and health professionals only gave away about 3 percent of their 1,000 doses. The same was true in Mingo County earlier Friday and Marshall University on Monday.
That's alarming to health department directors who say it provides a false comfort to the public.
"I think a lot of people, if they don't hear that there's a lot of illness out there with the swine flu, that they think it's passed and it won't come back," said Diana Riddle with the Mason County Health Department. "But they just have to remember that with pandemics there are waves, and it will most likely come back. We just don't know when."
Right now, the swine flu vaccine is only for people in the high- risk categories. We're told West Virginia will definitely open the vaccine to everyone by the end of the year -- probably even before Christmas.
Ohio just announced its vaccine will be open to all Ohioans beginning Dec. 14.
