ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Senior citizens have a new option when it comes to their traditional seasonal flu shot -- regular or extra strength.

Kristy Bolen with the Ashland Boyd County Health Department saw more than 400 people register for their seasonal flu shot on Tuesday.

"We didn't know what to expect," Bolen says. "Last year, there was so much confusion and panic over the H1N1 virus."

This year, the seasonal flu vaccine tackles three strains of flu, including H1N1 or swine flu. It's automatically included in the one vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control approved new recommendations that suggest everyone over the age of 6 months should be vaccinated against flu.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also had approved an "extra strength" vaccine last December for people 65 and older as part of its fast-track review process. Clinical studies showed the high-dose vaccine provided better immunity than regular vaccine among people in that age group. It also produced a higher rate of non-serious adverse side effects.

"This came out with it last year but, because of H1N1, it didn't make production until this year," Bolen says.

It's not available everywhere. You should call your local doctor's office or health department for more information
