HURRICANE, W.Va. (AP) -- Experts say as much as 30 percent of the nation's honeybee population has died out, but hobbyists in West Virginia are doing their part to keep colonies alive.

About 1,200 people across the state are beekeepers.

Wade Stiltner works for the Department of Agriculture's Apiary Program. He visits apiaries to make sure bees will be around to help keep trees and flowers blooming.

Bees pollinate plants, helping to produce the vegetation that other species need to survive.

But beekeeper Steve May says it's harder to keep bees alive than it used to be. Now, among other things, they need medicine.

It's an expensive hobby, but he says beekeepers can help cover some of their expenses by selling honey.

Ask any expert outside of myself what they believe the exact reasoning for the drastic cut in the numbers of the bee population might be? The answer can be attributed directly back to the state of West Virginia

My garden has attracted mostly bumblebees and a few wasps this year, but they still seem to get the job done.
