The schools go through a long application process where they outline what is going on at the school with the curriculum, staff development, etc. The applications are reviewed. From those applications, only SOME are chosen for site visits. The application must be pretty good to receive a site visit. A team of WVDE designees visit the school and make sure all that is reported in the application to be going on at the school is actually occurring. They spend the day. They interview students, teachers, parents, volunteers, etc. They make a recommendation to Dr. Paine. He reviews these recommendations and has the ultimate decision. I teach at one of the schools on the list and I have to say it was a lot of work. We, at Birch River Elementary, are very proud of our school, our students, our staff and our parents. We have a tiny little school, but it's truly wonderful!
Cabell County's Spring Hill Elementary, really? C'mon! Worst school, worst principal, worst possible neighborhood in town and they win as a "school of excellence"? Give me a break!
No Mason County? No wonder.
