CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Cabell County Board of Education met Tuesday to discuss results from the WESTEST 2, which is a state test taken last May.
The results help determine if the schools are meeting the Adequate Yearly Progress, which is set by the federal No Child Left Behind Policy.
Each year, students in Cabell County continue to show progress on the test; but as student’s scores increase on the test, so does the standard.
Cabell County Superintendent William Smith said, "I'm very pleased with the data and when you first get the data you really don't get a good picture of it."
The 2011 results show, nine schools in Cabell County met the Adequate Yearly Progress, also known as AYP. That’s down from 21 schools last year.
"We've been studying it and looking at what the data really means to us, to the point we see what it means to individual students. That's what makes it really powerful for us," Smith said.
The scores are helping school officials like Dr. Jeff Smith evaluate each school and each student.
"What we're trying to accomplish in our schools is being successful for the most part. It also shows we're very serious about finding out what is not working," Smith said.
In Cabell County, test scores are consistently up in reading, while scores in math are where students have the most room to grow.
Moving forward, school officials say they’re preparing students for more than a test.
"We're looking at our children being competitive on a global level, not just locally. On the global level, they will have to be able to take information and use it in new and different ways," Smith said.
In West Virginia, only 43 percent of schools met AYP.
Cabell County ranked 23rd.
ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) --West Virginia superintendent Steve Paine says students did better on this year's annual assessment test than last year despite tougher tests and stricter standards.
The education department won't publicly release the numbers until Monday, but Paine told the Board of Education on Thursday that almost every grade level saw increased scores on nearly all sections of the test.
The West Virginia Educational Standards Test 2, or WESTEST 2, is used to assess students' proficiency in math, reading and language arts, science and social studies.
The test was revised in 2008 to measure students on several new skills, including critical thinking and problem solving. Earlier this year, the minimum scores were raised.
Latest Comments
this west test is a joke. Its shoved down our kids throats so much, it seems to be the ONLY thing schools are focused on now. Its wrong, and needs to be abolished.
Parents, do you know what this means to your child? It means your child is being educated on how to pass a standardized test. You need to review their homework. they are not learning the essentials to make it through college just how to get their by passing standardized test.
West tests are a joke! The children are coached beginning weeks before testing.
