CHESAPEAKE, Ohio (WSAZ) -- When it comes to healthcare, a lot of folks put off going to the doctor or hospital because it's too expensive.
Saturday, a special community health fair was held in Chesapeake to give people strapped for a cash a chance to get blood work and other health screenings at no cost.
Teresa Lewis is a lab assistant and says this fair is for prevention of two of the biggest killers in our region -- heart disease and diabetes.
With back to school just around the corner, many parents put off their own health to help make sure their kids get everything they need to prepared, but health care is one of those things that may turn into a game of too little too late.
"I believe with people in our area that poverty levels are so high that if they are feeling ill they don't go to the hospital because they can't afford it," says Jessica Thayer, an outreach coordinator. "Its more important for them to pay their bills or to take care of their children."
Folks who came to this health fair were able to get screenings for cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure, three things that can be very dangerous if you're not aware of your levels.
This was the fifth annual community health fair sponsored by St. Mary's Medical Center.

I want to thank St. Mary's also for sponsoring this health fair. I wasn't aware of many of the things available to me and my husband. It was nice to have the opportunity to ask questions at the booths and their companies. I agree with Ernie. My husband has dementia and I am needing help with him. I was able to have many of my questions answered at the Abbott Home Care booth. Abbott was able to address many of the concerns I had about getting nursing help with my husband at home. Thank you Abbott and thank you again St. Mary's.
I THINK THIS WAS A WONDERFUL THING TO DO LIKE POSTED BY( ERNIE) I AM GLAD FOR YOU THAT YOU LEARNED SOMETHING THAT YOU NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT. IT WAS PRETTY BAD THAT YOUR OWN PHYSICIAN NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT HOSPICE. COULD BE THIRE TO HELP YOU WITH ALL THIS. WE HAD TO HAVE HOSPICE TO COME TO HELP MY MOM WITH MY DAD. AND I AM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT THAY ARE REAL NICE PEOPLE.AND THAY WILL DO WHAT EVER YOU NEED THEM TO DO. THAY HELPED US UNTIL THE END. SO CALL THEM MONDAY AND YOU WILL BE GLAD THAT YOU DID. WISHING YOU AND YOUR WIFE THE BEST IN YOUR LIFE. AND GOOD LUCK.
some of the public officials are very helpful, most are just helpful in bleeding you dry!
